RØDE launches compact Video S for creators at USD $499
RØDE has introduced the RØDECaster Video S, expanding its range of all-in-one video and audio production consoles. The device offers a broad suite of production capabilities in a compact format, with a retail price of USD $499. It targets solo creators, video podcasters and content producers seeking streamlined workflows for both audio and video.
Product features
The RØDECaster Video S features video switching for up to four sources and five customisable scenes. It is built on an octa-core CPU that manages both video and audio processing. The device includes three full HD (1080p) HDMI inputs with automatic frame rate conversion, supporting various camera feeds or external devices. There is also a configurable HDMI output for preview, programme, or multi-view monitoring.
In addition, a USB-C port enables connection to webcams or RØDE USB audio devices, expanding the types of sources users can integrate. Audio inputs are addressed with two Neutrik combo jacks fitted with RØDE's Revolution preamps. These are designed to ensure low noise and high gain for XLR microphones, instruments and other audio sources. Wireless connections are available through dual Series IV receivers, and Bluetooth connectivity is also included.
Control interface
Operators have access to a two-inch high-resolution touchscreen and a rotary encoder for device configuration and management. The console provides buttons for direct access to video sources, scenes and assignable functions. Users can trigger different video feeds, layouts, and overlays, or initiate chroma keying for background replacement. The console also features an "Inspect" capability, which allows real-time preview and adjustment of any input or scene before going live.
The system supports network cameras, including PTZ operation, via up to four NDI inputs and one output over Ethernet. With the RØDE Capture app for iOS, users can add iPhone camera feeds as wireless video sources. Automatic switching between camera angles based on audio input is supported, providing hands-free control in single-operator settings.
Streaming and recording
For content distribution, the RØDECaster Video S permits direct streaming to platforms such as YouTube and Twitch via Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB. Recording is handled by writing directly to connected USB storage devices, with isolated recording available for each source to allow for detailed post-production editing. The system incorporates processing via APHEX software, offering tools such as equalisation, compression, noise gates, de-essing, and effects including Aural Exciter, Big Bottom and Compellor.
Users have the option to manage their productions remotely via the RØDECaster app, which provides full configuration and control over graphics, scenes, mixing and other advanced options.
Intended audience
The RØDECaster Video S has been designed for versatility, aiming at users ranging from video podcasters and livestreamers to solo production professionals. Its compact design seeks to balance capability with desktop space constraints, while the simplified workflow is intended to reduce the complexity typically involved with professional video and audio production.
"The RØDECaster Video marked a complete paradigm shift in how creators produce video content. With the RØDECaster Video S, we're delivering that same power and flexibility in a more compact and flexible format. Today's creators crave quality, versatility and simplicity - and the RØDECaster Video S delivers all of that in one ultra-intuitive, value-packed console," said Damien Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, RØDE
