Kooperativa adopts Camunda to drive insurance process automation
Camunda has partnered with the Czech insurance company Kooperativa to support the automation and orchestration of complex insurance business processes, aiming to improve operational reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
Kooperativa, a member of the Vienna Insurance Group, is moving away from its legacy monolithic core system in favour of implementing Camunda's process automation platform. This initiative forms part of The Neuron Project, which seeks to establish a modern platform for managing the full lifecycle of insurance contracts and related processes.
The use of Camunda will centralise automation for Kooperativa's core insurance services. This approach is expected to allow the company to manage high volumes of process and decision instances more efficiently, while maintaining reliability, compliance, performance and scalability across its operations.
Business transformation
The first release of the new system will support citizens' property insurance. However, the company has planned its development to be adaptable for extension to various other business lines in the future.
Pavel Kraus, Head of BPM Centre of Excellence at Kooperativa, highlighted the benefits of the new platform, stating the important role of flexibility and control in meeting regulatory and customer demands while improving internal efficiencies.
"Camunda gives us the control and flexibility we need to modernise our core systems while remaining compliant and responsive to customer needs. We can now design and deploy changes in our business processes faster, ensure consistent execution across departments, and gain better visibility into our automated processes. It's a major step forward in delivering efficient, high-quality service at scale."
Lukáš Zelenka, Project Manager at Kooperativa, emphasised the importance of working in close cooperation with Camunda consultants, particularly in maintaining robust standards and strengthening system reliability.
"Working closely with Camunda consulting and support team is enabling us to build resilient, scalable process automation while maintaining strict adherence to regulatory standards and best practices in finance. Its architecture and robust monitoring capabilities allow us to proactively manage system health and performance, ensuring uptime and reliability across critical services."
According to the company, Camunda's architecture and monitoring features enable Kooperativa to identify and address issues as they arise. The underlying technology helps to keep key business processes operational and consistent across various departments.
Insurance sector context
Frederic Meier, Senior Vice President, Sales at Camunda, noted the changes taking place in the insurance sector and the role of automation in adapting to a regulatory and customer-focused landscape.
"Kooperativa is a great example of how insurers can use automation to adapt and lead in a highly regulated, customer-focused industry. With Camunda, they're not just improving internal efficiency - they're building a future-proof foundation for innovation across all lines of business."
Kooperativa remains one of the largest insurance providers in the Czech Republic, managing over 4.7 million contracts for nearly 2.5 million clients. The company records annual written premiums exceeding CZK 47 billion (approximately EUR €1.87 billion), with a national market share of more than 24%.
As part of the Vienna Insurance Group, Kooperativa benefits from access to a Central European insurance conglomerate with almost two centuries of tradition. The move toward automated, orchestrated processes aligns with broader trends in the insurance industry, where digital transformation and regulatory compliance continue to drive investment in modern technology platforms.
