PepsiCo chooses Mecalux for intralogistics solutions at Belgian plant
Beverage and food multinational PepsiCo has chosen Mecalux to install its cutting-edge intralogistics solutions at the Veurne plant in Belgium, one of Europe's largest potato crisps factories. The implementation of Mecalux technology aims to handle the high production pace of the large-scale facility.
PepsiCo plans to install the Automated Pallet Shuttle system equipped with transfer cars supplied by the intralogistics group Mecalux. As articulated by PepsiCo, "The Mecalux solution will help us absorb the high production pace at our Veurne factory and unlock our further growth plans."
The modern logistic approach should harmonise the flow and storage of the daily production of 2 million bags of crisps from prominent brands like Lay's, Doritos, Bugles and Cheetos. Integrating Mecalux technology is a significant step for Pepsico in its mission to develop a fully automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS).
The automated Pallet Shuttle system is a highly efficient, high-density storage solution that ensures high product inflows and outflows. The system will be connected to PepsiCo's production plant via an extended conveyor line over 100 metres in length. The AS/RS will consist of four aisles with two blocks of racking on each side. Twelve transfer cars, one on each storage level, will transport goods to the corresponding storage channel. Once there, a motorised shuttle car will automatically move pallets to their locations.
PepsiCo will also employ the Mecalux Easy WMS warehouse management system for real-time stock control. This software will be harmonised with PepsiCo's ERP system to ensure smooth operations. The management software is expected to efficiently manage the product flow from production to the AS/RS, leading up to the seamless preparation for distribution to clients.
PepsiCo's Veurne factory, acquired 25 years ago, has become one of Europe's largest crisps and snacks production facilities. Spreading over 40,000 square metres, with an area of eight football pitches, the factory is recognised for its advanced and eco-friendly technology. Including the new AS/RS will further add to the efficiency and productivity of the Veurne plant.
The collaboration between PepsiCo and Mecalux marks a significant advancement in the intralogistics solutions implemented at the Veurne plant in Belgium. By integrating cutting-edge technology, including the Automated Pallet Shuttle system and the Easy WMS warehouse management system, PepsiCo aims to enhance its operational efficiency and accommodate the high production pace of one of Europe's largest potato crisps factories.
This strategic partnership underscores PepsiCo's commitment to innovation and sustainable growth while reinforcing Mecalux's position as a competitive provider of intralogistics solutions. Together, they pave the way for optimised processes and streamlined operations, ultimately contributing to the success of PepsiCo's Veurne facility and its mission to deliver quality products to consumers worldwide.
