Motorola Solutions has extended its agreement to manage Denmark's national TETRA communications network through 2034, with an option to continue until 2039.

The agreement covers Sikkerhedsnettet, or SINE, Denmark's nationwide radio network used by emergency services and military personnel. As part of the renewal, the network has been upgraded with Motorola Solutions' DIMETRA X Core software.

The upgrade adds DIMETRA Connect, which allows users to roam from the TETRA network onto mobile phone networks while retaining secure radio functions and encryption. Voice and data traffic can continue automatically when a user moves beyond land mobile radio coverage.

SINE serves as Denmark's national communications system for police, fire and military users. The changes show continued support for land mobile radio as the main platform for critical voice communications, even as broadband links are added to extend reach.

More than 45,000 emergency services users are covered by the new roaming arrangement between TETRA and broadband networks. The switching process does not require manual intervention by frontline staff.

Network upgrade

The renewed contract was awarded in late 2023. It combines long-term operation of the national network with a modernisation programme intended to support users working across borders and jurisdictions.

The arrangement also includes Motorola Solutions' MXP660 multi-bearer portable radios, which work with the upgraded network. The devices are intended to give personnel access to radio communications over both the TETRA system and mobile networks when needed.

Public safety agencies have long relied on TETRA systems for secure and resilient voice communications. In Denmark, the addition of roaming onto mobile networks appears aimed at reducing coverage gaps in difficult terrain and other challenging operating environments.

One frontline user highlighted the practical effect of the changes for emergency workers.

"This technology is about peace of mind for our people. Our teams can now operate across challenging environments knowing there's another level of resiliency protecting their essential communications," said Mogens Sandberg Brix, Division Officer and Inspector, Greater Copenhagen Fire Department.

European role

Motorola Solutions described Denmark as the first country to deploy DIMETRA Connect, making it an early adopter of a model that links traditional mission-critical radio systems with commercial mobile infrastructure.

The approach reflects a wider trend in public safety communications, as governments seek to preserve dedicated radio networks while extending coverage and flexibility through broadband connections. For emergency services, the appeal lies in maintaining established secure voice systems without depending entirely on mobile networks.

For Denmark, the extension also provides a long operating horizon for a national system used by multiple branches of the state. Long-term contracts of this type can help agencies plan equipment, training and cross-service coordination around a stable communications platform.

Michael Kaae, Senior Vice President of Sales International, Motorola Solutions, said the project highlighted the ongoing role of TETRA in emergency communications.

"Denmark's continued investment in SINE shows how TETRA continues to act as the trusted foundation for mission-critical communications. As the first nation to deploy DIMETRA Connect, Denmark is setting a new benchmark for public safety communications across Europe. This modernisation provides 45,000 first responders with a seamless connection they can trust wherever the mission takes them, combining trusted radio reliability with broadband versatility, securing Denmark's mission-critical communications well into the next decade," said Kaae.
