Drone Major launches platform to boost UK drone SME access
Drone Major has introduced a managed procurement services platform for the global drone sector. The platform provides a new way for UK-based small and medium-sized enterprises to access large-scale contract opportunities in the drone and robotics field.
The launch marks a step towards increasing supply chain independence within the UK drone industry. Drone Major aims to reduce the reliance on overseas suppliers, particularly from China.
Industry experts expect the global drone and robotics market to grow. Estimates suggest the sector's value will rise from GBP £55 billion in 2024 to GBP £121 billion by 2030. This expansion presents a substantial opportunity for British firms.
Access for SMEs
The managed procurement platform offers a centralised marketplace. Buyers and suppliers can connect with trusted partners in the drones and unmanned systems sector. Companies can take part in projects that previously might have been out of reach, especially for smaller businesses and startups.
Drone Major coordinates the entire supply chain process for clients using the platform. The company assesses bids, selects appropriate suppliers, and manages delivery through to project completion. The platform covers project management, regulatory compliance, logistics, and quality control.
Earlier in 2025, Drone Major received approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority for the country's first beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone flights over critical national infrastructure. The company has now incorporated this regulatory experience into its platform offer.
Industry reaction
Robert Garbett, Founder and Chief Executive of Drone Major, said the platform addresses a key issue in the British drone ecosystem.
"The UK has the talent and technologies, many of which reside within our own SME base, but it has lacked the mechanism to bring them to the front line effectively. The launch of our new platform marks a major step forward in empowering British SMEs and startups, giving them a powerful tool to navigate and simplify complex procurement processes in the drone industry."
He said the new platform will benefit the wider sector.
"It will help place the UK at the forefront of the global drone industry, while also strengthening the UK's supply chain independence... and reducing reliance on China," said Garbett.
According to Garbett, the business-to-business marketplace is designed to cover "virtually any solution in the Unmanned Systems domain." He said this would benefit innovators in the sector.
"By opening up access to major opportunities, we're putting the cards in the hands of the innovators. This platform will help drive a procurement revolution in the UK - cutting costs, saving time, and transforming how enterprise engages with the SME supply chain," said Garbett.
Drone Major said it will manage projects from initial bid through to final delivery, including support for regulatory approval where required.
The company will apply its experience in BVLOS operations and compliance to projects delivered through the platform.
Drone Major said the new procurement platform is now running and open to both buyers and suppliers in the global drone sector.
