IXI unveils world’s lightest smart glasses with true-fit design

Fri, 21st Nov 2025

IXI has developed a prototype smart glasses frame weighing just 22 grams, including all electronic components.

This design milestone positions the company's product as the lightest smart eyewear currently developed, as competitors' offerings typically weigh around 50 grams.

Research focus

The company's engineering team conducted a research programme spanning several years to address the ergonomic challenges faced by wearers of both traditional and smart eyewear.

Since 2021, frame and fit research included extensive ergonomic testing with about 360 participants across London, Finland, the UK, France, Sweden, and Germany. Test subjects represented various age groups and vision needs, from reading glasses users to those requiring multifocals.

The research confirmed persistent problems related to comfort and posture with conventional smart glasses. Wearers often experience eye and neck strain due to compromises in the optical ergonomics required to accommodate electronics.

Frame architecture

IXI's latest prototype introduces what the company calls a true-fit architecture. This system allows custom fitting at the temples, nose piece, and through adjustable pantoscopic tilt-an angle critical to aligning lenses correctly with the eyes. Such adjustability aims to enhance comfort for a wider array of face shapes and user preferences.

"The goal was never just to make something lighter - it was to make wearing glasses feel so effortless that you forget you're even wearing them. We didn't want to focus only on the weight, because that's only one part of eyewear comfort and fit. We set out to build a frame fit architecture that would offer uncompromised fit for various face shapes," said Timo Yliluoma, Chief Design Officer, IXI.

The frame is produced with tooling intended for mass manufacturing, indicating that IXI is preparing for large-scale production ahead of commercial launch.

The ability to manufacture the frames at high volume addresses an industry barrier: integrating advanced electronics into eyewear without negatively affecting the wearer's experience.

Industry impact

IXI's smart glasses are based on liquid crystal autofocus lenses, with embedded technology that tracks eye movement and adjusts focus automatically.

The company's approach will allow users to tailor the frame fit without needing to compromise on style or function. This aligns with expanding European production partnerships, which are expected to support manufacturing as the market launch approaches.

"This isn't just a design breakthrough, it changes how people buy eyewear. Traditionally, fit has dictated style: you start by finding what works for your face and only then choose from what's available. IXI's approach turns that model on its head. For the first time, people can choose the frame they want, knowing the right fit will follow. It marks a fundamental shift for the eyewear industry: from choosing what fits to expecting everything to fit," said Niko Eiden, CEO and co-founder, IXI.
