Kingston has introduced its first cable-free solid-state drive (SSD), designed to meet demand for portable storage that works across a range of devices. The new Dual Portable SSD is aimed at users who need to transfer or back up files between USB Type-A and USB-C devices without the use of a separate cable.
Device compatibility
The Dual Portable SSD can be used with laptops, desktops, mobile devices and other compatible hardware, supporting both USB Type-A and USB-C connectors. It features USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity, and is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, and iOS/iPadOS, although mobile devices may require an additional adapter.
Performance highlights
The SSD offers read speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds up to 950MB/s when connected to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 device. These speeds are intended to facilitate the transfer of large files such as high-resolution images and 4K video content. Actual performance may vary depending on the host device and usage conditions.
Capacity and design
The device is available in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. It is housed in a compact, durable metal and plastic casing that measures just under 72mm in length and weighs 13 grams. The design allows it to fit easily into a pocket, bag, or purse, highlighting portability as a key feature.
Data management
Kingston is targeting consumers who want more control over data management. The cable-free design allows for direct connection to a range of devices for file transfer, with no need for multiple cables or adapters, except where a device-specific OTG adapter is required for some mobile hardware.
Warranty and support
The Dual Portable SSD comes with a limited five-year warranty and access to free technical support from Kingston. The warranty also considers device usage, with coverage based on either the time period or the device's wear indicator status.
"More and more consumers are looking to take their data into their own hands," said Liny Cheliyan, Business Manager - Prosumer Flash and SSD Kingston EMEA. "Now with the convenience of Kingston's Dual Portable SSD, users can do just that and easily transfer, share or backup their important files across a variety of USB-A and USB-C devices."
