Latos to build 40 data centres in UK by 2030, starting in Cardiff
UK-based Latos Data Centres has announced plans to develop 40 data centres nationwide by 2030, including its first hyperscale facility in Cardiff.
Latos aims to unlock the potential of advanced computing technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), for UK businesses by combining hyperscale data centres with smaller, volumetric facilities located at the network edge. The company's hyperscale data centre in Cardiff will be designed to Tier III specifications, catering to the requirements of global technology companies. The facility will feature a capacity of 90MVA and encompass 50,400 square metres of floor space.
The Cardiff data centre's energy needs will be met by a 100% renewable supply from the National Grid, with additional support from the neighbouring Tremorfa Energy Park, a 1,000MW battery energy storage facility. Latos' edge data centres are expected to play a significant role in advancing AI use cases like autonomous vehicles and smart manufacturing by providing computational power closer to the point of need.
Latos employs a modular design approach, allowing for the rapid construction of new volumetric facilities in under six months on plots as small as 0.3 acres. These centres offer a bespoke turnkey service encompassing land acquisition, construction, fit-out, security, and management.
The industry's shift towards network edge processing is foundational to Latos' strategy. Studies by STL Consulting anticipate that by 2028, approximately 50% of AI-related workloads will be managed at the network edge. Furthermore, McKinsey research forecasts that global demand for AI-ready data centre capacity will grow at an average annual rate of 33% from 2023 to 2030.
Mike Carlin, Founder of Latos Data Centres, stated, "The growth of AI means the UK's data centre map needs to change. Organisations will need more computing power closer to where it is needed and the ability to specify the exact facilities they need. They also need the peace of mind that comes from working with an experienced partner. Our team has a deep heritage designing and building complex data facilities. We understand better than anyone how best to deliver the infrastructure UK organisations will need."
Construction on the Latos site in Cardiff is set to commence immediately, paving the way for the creation of 1,000 local construction jobs and 200 permanent positions once operational, along with an estimated 250 to 300 roles within the local supply chain. Latos' partners in the Cardiff project include PCG and TEP.
