Meta & Oakley launch AI sports glasses from USD $399

Meta has announced the launch of Oakley Meta glasses, marking its expansion into the sports eyewear segment through a partnership with Oakley.

The new Oakley Meta HSTN is the first product in Meta's Performance AI glasses category, developed for athletes and sports enthusiasts. These glasses integrate digital and physical features, including extended battery life, a high-resolution camera, water resistance, and Meta's AI assistant.

Key product features

The Oakley Meta HSTN will be available in several countries, including the UK, the US, Canada, numerous European countries, and Australia. According to Meta, the device offers up to eight hours of typical use and 19 hours on standby from a single charge. The included charging case provides up to 48 hours of additional charging capacity on the go. The product also supports fast charging, enabling users to charge the glasses up to 50% in just 20 minutes.

These glasses are equipped with an Ultra HD (3K) camera for hands-free content capture and sharing. The IPX4 water resistance rating is designed to meet the needs of users engaged in physical activities. Additionally, open-ear speakers are integrated into the frames, enabling users to listen to audio content without the need for earbuds.

Integration of Meta AI

Meta AI is built into the Oakley Meta HSTN, providing athletes with access to information via voice commands. For example, users can ask about current wind conditions while on the golf course or use voice prompts to record video and share it directly to social media platforms. This functionality is designed to facilitate both training and performance on the field.

The glasses are reportedly designed for maximal ease of use in both sports and daily scenarios, with support for a range of commands through Meta's AI assistant.

Design details and options

The Oakley Meta HSTN range includes models equipped with Oakley's PRIZM Lens technology. This technology is described as amplifying contrast and enhancing vision by fine-tuning the light spectrum, which aims to help athletes see visual cues more clearly. The glasses are available in a variety of frame and lens colour combinations, including options such as Warm Grey with PRIZM Ruby lenses and Black with PRIZM Polar Black lenses. Prescription-ready variants are also part of the lineup.

A limited-edition Oakley Meta HSTN will be offered in honour of Oakley's 50th anniversary, featuring gold accents and gold 24K PRIZM Polar lenses. This edition will be available for preorder at USD $499, with subsequent releases in the collection to be priced from USD $399.

Athletes featured in the global campaign include World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. The product will be promoted with examples of athletes using the glasses to check surf conditions, judge wind on the golf course, skateboarding, and documenting sports activities hands-free.

Future availability and ongoing development

Meta confirmed plans to expand the Oakley Meta HSTN offering to additional regions, with releases scheduled for Mexico, India, and the United Arab Emirates later in the year. The product launch is part of a broader collaboration between Meta and EssilorLuxottica, with a focus on applying technology to enhance athlete performance and experience.
