Street Fighter II gets 14-karat gold My Play Watch

My Play Watch has launched an officially licensed Street Fighter II watch in collaboration with Capcom to mark the game's 35th anniversary.

The watch combines a digital timepiece with a built-in version of Street Fighter II adapted for touchscreen play. It is finished in 14-karat gold and comes with two interchangeable straps and a magnetic charging cable.

Users can choose from the arcade game's eight original playable characters: Ryu, Ken, Guile, Chun-Li, E. Honda, Blanka, Dhalsim and Zangief. The game also features opponents from the rest of the roster, including Balrog, Sagat, Vega and M. Bison.

Gameplay uses touch controls on the watch face. Players choose between three move types shown on screen - low attacks, overhead attacks and anti-air attacks - and try to improve their score as opponents become faster and more frequent.

Each character has a separate high score. Stages are based on locations from the original game, including Battle Harbor and the rooftops of Suzaku Castle.

Watch functions

Outside the game, the device offers digital timekeeping and fitness tracking without requiring a phone connection or app pairing. During setup, users select a favourite fighter, and that choice carries through to the watch interface and alerts.

Features include a character-themed watch face, step-goal notifications using victory poses, and alarm and timer alerts with character animations. The operating system also uses audio samples from the arcade game, including character voices and sound effects.

The launch adds Street Fighter II to My Play Watch's catalogue of branded gaming watches. Previous ranges have used franchises including Atari, Space Invaders, Tetris and emoji.

Capcom, the Japanese games group behind Street Fighter, has built one of the industry's longest-running fighting game series. It also owns franchises including Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Mega Man, Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney.

The Street Fighter II model is priced at $79.99 and is available for pre-order, with shipping expected in December. Early pre-order customers will also receive a themed display stand while supplies last.
