Tata to modernise NHS Supply Chain, targeting £1B value
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has secured a multi-year partnership with NHS Supply Chain to modernise IT systems and deliver essential supplies across more than 17,000 NHS locations.
The collaboration aims to overhaul legacy technology with cloud computing and artificial intelligence to increase the speed, reliability, and efficiency of the NHS's supply chain operations.
Technology deployment
The agreement will see TCS provide application development support and maintain core business systems and cloud infrastructure for NHS Supply Chain. A new supply chain ERP platform will replace multiple outdated systems to help speed up product movements and support better decision-making.
Matthew Wynn, Executive Director of Data and Technology at NHS Supply Chain, said, "Our partnership with TCS will play a pivotal role in the NHS Supply Chain Modernisation Programme. Working alongside our teams, TCS will help modernise our legacy systems into a more streamlined, cloud-based environment. This shift will strengthen our resilience, improve user experience, and enable us to respond faster to changing business and customer needs. Ultimately it will enhance our operational efficiency and service delivery as we work towards our commitment to unlock over £1 billion in recurrent value by 2030."
Operational efficiencies
The migration to cloud-based systems and wider adoption of artificial intelligence are expected to accelerate deliveries and manage the annual movement of more than eight million orders. NHS Supply Chain engages with over a thousand suppliers, with its operations supporting frontline healthcare by delivering critical supplies to hospitals and care centres throughout England and Wales.
The new partnership includes further commitments to improve governance, update delivery frameworks, and introduce a more agile culture across the organisation. System upgrades are designed to help the NHS respond more rapidly to fluctuations in demand and improve service quality, especially during periods of heightened need.
Workforce and sustainability
TCS will support these projects in part through its recent commitment to hire and train over 5,000 workers in the UK. In addition to software transformation, the company will help NHS Supply Chain adapt its practices to reduce environmental impact and implement monitoring systems to track sustainability metrics.
"TCS has decades of experience in taking large, complex legacy systems and modernising them using solutions like cloud and AI-enabled platforms. Our work will replace the existing legacy system with a state-of-the-art supply chain ERP solution to help NHS Supply Chain deliver more for less and enhance patient experience," said Vinay Singhvi, Head of UK & Ireland market. "TCS has operated in the UK for over 50 years, and we recently committed to hiring and training over 5,000 new UK based workers and they will, in part, support transformative projects like these."
Supplier integration
The project is intended to provide improved support to the 1,000-plus suppliers working with NHS Supply Chain. The enhanced digital framework will allow for greater visibility across the supply network and facilitate smoother collaboration to meet demand at scale. Processes for ordering, tracking, and delivering medical equipment, food, and services are expected to be integrated into one platform.
