Toyota & Cuvva launch app-based short-term car cover
Toyota Insurance Services UK has teamed up with digital insurer Cuvva to launch temporary motor insurance for eligible Toyota and Lexus vehicles via a dedicated mobile app.
According to the firms, the new product offers fully comprehensive cover for durations spanning from one hour to 28 days. To get on the road, customers simply activate their policy directly through the Cuvva app.
The launch targets drivers who want to arrange insurance at short notice. The companies pointed to demand for app-based services during ownership moments that do not fit annual-only policies.
Short-term cover
The product sits alongside Toyota Insurance Services' existing insurance offer distributed through the Toyota network. Toyota said the short-term option addresses situations such as vehicle handovers, temporary cover needs, and gaps between annual policies.
The companies noted that drivers collecting a new vehicle can arrange cover in minutes via the app, highlighting that the digital process completely removes the need for traditional paperwork.
Toyota Insurance Services stated that the partnership blends its established insurance operations with Cuvva's mobile-first model. The firm added that the arrangement bolsters Toyota-backed insurance offerings across its broader network.
Changing habits
In the UK motor market, annual policies still dominate for many drivers. Short-term options have grown alongside app-based services and changing patterns of vehicle use, including borrowing and temporary access.
Toyota Insurance Services UK said the partnership forms part of its approach to insurance that fits different stages of vehicle ownership. It said it aims to keep standards consistent across short-term and annual cover.
Jason Milton, CEO, Toyota Insurance Services UK, linked the product to shifting customer needs.
"At Toyota Insurance Services, our ambition is to support customers throughout every stage of their mobility journey, not just at the point of purchase. People's needs change over time, and our role is to provide protection that evolves with them. Partnering with Cuvva enables us to combine Toyota's long-standing reputation for trust and reliability with flexible, app-based short-term insurance that fits modern lifestyles. Together, we're making it easier for customers to stay protected in everyday moments, creating a more seamless ownership and usership experience; providing confidence and peace of mind whenever, however and for as long as mobility is part of their lives," said Jason Milton, CEO, Toyota Insurance Services UK.
Dealer moments
Cuvva said it has worked with car manufacturers and dealers in the UK. It said short-term policies suit moments when drivers are changing vehicles or do not want to commit immediately to annual cover.
"From working closely with car manufacturers and dealers across the UK, it's clear that short-term insurance can make car ownership far easier by supporting drivers at moments of change. Whether they're test driving a new car, borrowing one for a short time, or need cover that sits outside a traditional annual policy, it gives customers the time and flexibility to choose the right long-term cover without having to rush into a decision. Working with a brand of Toyota's standing creates a fantastic opportunity to enhance the insurance experience for customers, so they can focus on enjoying their car from day one," said Freddy Macnamara.
Insurance operations
Established in 1999, Toyota Insurance Services serves as the brand's insurance centre of excellence in Europe, distributing specialist products through the Toyota network.
Partnering with them is Cuvva, which offers short-term car insurance policies starting from just one hour. Since its launch in 2016, the digital insurer has sold over 14 million policies and supported more than 1.5 million customers.
Cuvva said 8% of all motor policies sold monthly in the UK are sold through its app. It said it has raised funding from investors including RTP Global, LocalGlobe, Breega, Digital Horizon, Techstars and Tekton.
Toyota Short-Term Insurance by Cuvva is available for eligible Toyota and Lexus vehicles, with the companies positioning the product for drivers seeking cover around handovers, borrowing, and short gaps between annual policies.
