UK pushes for AI leadership but must unlock unstructured data

The UK's ambitions to become a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) have been given a fresh boost, following OpenAI's confirmation of plans to expand its UK operations and work directly with government departments to enhance the nation's AI infrastructure. The move has generated significant interest and comment from technology leaders, who highlight both the promise and the challenges tied to such a rapid evolution in the country's digital landscape.
Bernadette Wightman, CEO of Iron Mountain UK & Ireland, welcomed the news, emphasising the importance of continued investment in the nation's AI capabilities. She observed that the partnership between OpenAI and the UK government was a significant step for the country's digital and data management sectors but cautioned that more work remains to be done to ensure the benefits of AI are widely realised.
According to research conducted by Iron Mountain, UK organisations currently lag behind many global counterparts in AI maturity. The findings suggest that only 7% of UK-based organisations are classed as advanced in their use of AI technologies. In addition, under half of these organisations recognise the strategic significance of unstructured data – which includes sources such as emails, documents, images, and video – within their AI strategies.
"This is a significant missed opportunity, as unstructured data holds immense potential to drive innovation, improve decision-making, and deliver better public services," said Wightman. The effective utilisation of unstructured data is widely viewed as critical to unlocking the next wave of AI-driven transformation across both the private and public spheres. However, many organisations continue to face challenges in making their data accessible and actionable for AI applications.
Wightman called for a concerted effort to address what she described as the foundational challenge of unlocking the value in the UK's unstructured data. She highlighted the necessity of targeted investment in digital infrastructure, the development of specialised skills, and the creation of robust governance frameworks to ensure that data is trusted and available for AI deployment.
