Dave Joyce steps in as CEO of Macrium amid industry growth

Tue, 10th Sep 2024

Macrium has announced that Dave Joyce will step in as the new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding the company's founder, Nick Sills. This change is seen as an important step for the company, which operates in the rapidly growing sector of data protection and disaster recovery solutions. The data protection market is projected to surpass USD $610 billion by 2032.

Dave Joyce joined Macrium in 2023 as Chief Operating Officer. He brings over 25 years of experience in leading software, payment, and fintech businesses. His career began in the late 1980s with Visa International. Nick Sills, who founded Macrium and led its growth, will continue with the company as an advisor, focusing on innovation and maintaining the firm's technical excellence.

Regarding his new role, Dave Joyce stated, "The scale of the opportunity in the backup and disaster recovery industry over the coming years is huge, largely driven by the ceaseless pressure on businesses to be cyber resilient and keep up with evolving regulations. Take the new NIS2 directive coming into effect in October - it's a prime example of how today's regulations are pushing companies to prioritise cyber resilience."

Joyce also commented on the impact of technology advancements on the industry. "We're also seeing how rapid advancements in technology are reshaping the industry. AI is a great example - it's an amazing tool for innovation, but it can also be a serious threat to business security if misused. The need for organisations to adapt their thinking from reactive security measures to proactive cyber resilience is crucial, and a solid backup and disaster recovery strategy is the backbone of it," he said.

The firm's flagship product, Macrium Reflect, is designed to ensure business continuity beyond simple backups. Reflect is aimed at helping organisations maintain operations even in critical scenarios, an aspect that aligns with Macrium's commitment to innovation. Joyce's decision to join Macrium was influenced by this innovation as well as the company's culture and experience.

"When Nick offered me the role it was, quite literally, an irresistible opportunity to join a team with so much experience, energy and passion for solving our customers' problems, a testament to Nick and the business he has built," Joyce observed. "As CEO, I am focused on maintaining our brand as a provider of high-quality, well-engineered products, further developing the product suite, and working to enhance our customer service and reach into core markets. We have the best product in the market, which our customers love. Now it is time to ensure we fully embrace this opportunity and grow the business to its full potential."

Headquartered in Manchester, with another office in Denver, Colorado, Macrium provides services to a global client base. The company's product suite is designed to address the needs of organisations with complex information technology and operational technology infrastructure.

Joyce praised the contributions of Nick Sills and his team, stating, "Nick and his team have built a range of products acknowledged globally as an industry benchmark, evidenced by a loyal customer base of internationally recognised logos. These businesses have placed their trust in this iconic brand and the team who have built it. To paraphrase customer feedback, Macrium Reflect is 'easy to use, and hard not to love'. By staying true to our underlying culture and values of pride, passion, and technical excellence, we will continue to drive innovation in the sector and broaden our product portfolio to meet the fast-moving challenges of our customers' cybersecurity needs."
