IFSAS to deliver security & automation at new Crete airport

Yesterday

IFSAS has been selected to implement and install advanced security, fire safety, and automation systems at the New Heraklion International Airport in Crete.

Security project awarded

The company was appointed by GMR Airports Greece Single Member SA to oversee the comprehensive design, implementation, and installation of three core security infrastructures at what is now the second largest airport in Greece. These systems comprise the CCTV surveillance network, access control, and the public address system serving the terminal and its surrounding facilities.

The New Heraklion International Airport is described as a significant development in Greek aviation infrastructure, integrating elements of sustainability and technological advancement while aiming to address mounting passenger traffic and stringent security requirements.

Sustainable design

The airport's approach centres on sustainability, with eco-friendly building materials and renewable energy sources featured prominently in both the construction and operational phases of the facility. The adoption of resource-efficient practices aims to minimise the airport's carbon footprint, contributing to broader regional objectives for environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

Passenger-facing technology initiatives will also be a notable part of the airport's offering. These include advanced biometric systems and automation that aim to streamline passenger flow and reduce wait times. Integrating these technologies is intended to simultaneously bolster security by enhancing identification, tracking, and monitoring throughout the passenger journey.

Scope of the IFSAS contract

IFSAS is responsible for several mission-critical systems designed with adaptability and future expansion in mind. The installation includes a comprehensive network of high-resolution CCTV cameras providing real-time surveillance across key areas. These systems use intelligent analytics to support rapid detection and response to potential security incidents.

Access control forms another cornerstone of the project, ensuring that only authorised personnel can enter secured zones. IFSAS's system will allow for robust authentication and manage movements in multiple restricted sections, an essential requirement within an international aviation environment.

The public address system will facilitate broad communication, supporting both daily operations and emergency coordination. The aim is to guarantee that passengers and staff receive clear, timely broadcasts to maintain smooth airport function and responsive emergency management when necessary.

Facility overview

The New Heraklion International Airport spans 94,000 square metres, providing 19 boarding gates to accommodate a range of aircraft. The 3,200-metre runway is designed for both civilian and military aviation uses. Passenger amenities have also been prioritised, including leisure areas and retail services designed to support comfort and convenience. These facilities are intended to support Crete's position as a key cultural and economic hub within the region.

Commitment to aviation security

The CEO of IFSAS, Leonidas Kasiapis, stated: "The assignment of this strategic project is yet another proof to our commitment to shaping the future of aviation security in Greece and Europe. Our collaboration with the GMR Airports Greece Single Member SA strengthens IFSAS's leadership in the security sector while simultaneously presenting us with a new challenge for growth in technology. Innovation, sustainability, and technological excellence are the key pillars upon which we are building the future of aviation security. We are proud to contribute to the creation of an airport that serves as a model not only for Greece but for the global aviation community."

IFSAS is working with its international partners Gräf & Meyer and Johnson Controls to deploy a secure and efficient aviation environment. The company's process is structured to meet the highest standards for quality, reliability, and safety in airport infrastructure, supporting both current and evolving operational requirements.

Jason Burrell, VP of Sales EMEALA and APAC, Security Solutions, Johnson Controls stated: "IFSAS has proven to be a valued integration partner on this landmark airport project, expertly deploying Johnson Controls' security technologies to meet the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency. Their commitment to excellence reflects the strength of our partnership and our shared goal of creating a safer, smarter travel environment."

This security infrastructure project forms part of the airport's broader ambition to model technological advancement, sustainability, and passenger-focused design for aviation facilities both within Greece and internationally.
