New book reframes compliance as growth tool for start-ups

Fri, 30th Jan 2026

Arcus Compliance Founder and Chief Executive Lee Bryan has released a new book on how start-ups and challenger brands can approach regulatory requirements as part of business strategy in regulated markets.

The book, titled The Compliance Edge: How disruptive entrepreneurs win in regulated markets, targets founders and senior managers in sectors with complex UK and EU regulations. Bryan positions compliance as a commercial discipline rather than a back-office function.

Bryan leads Arcus Compliance, an advisory firm serving brand owners in regulated industries. The company has operated since 2017 and has worked across product categories, including novel nicotine, cosmetics, consumer electronics, personal protective equipment, adult toys, and children's toys.

In the book, Bryan argues that founders often treat compliance as a drag on growth. He sets out a different model. He describes compliance as a way to build trust with retailers, regulators and customers. He links that trust to business resilience and longer-term growth.

Framework approach

A central element of the book is what Bryan calls the ARC methodology. The framework covers agile systems, a risk-based approach and compliance culture. Bryan describes it as a "living methodology" that adapts to different businesses.

The book also discusses emerging topics that affect compliance programmes and product governance. Bryan references AI-driven enforcement and Digital Product Passports as areas that teams need to monitor. Digital Product Passports have become a growing focus in European policy discussions around product information and supply chain transparency.

Bryan also outlines operational steps for teams managing regulated products. He focuses on identifying compliance blind spots. He also discusses building scalable systems and embedding accountability in teams.

Target readers

The intended audience includes Quality Assurance Directors, Heads of Regulatory, Compliance Managers, Chief Executives and other decision-makers. The book sits at the intersection of product compliance, risk management and operational leadership.

Bryan's work focuses on sectors where regulation and product standards shape market access. Consumer electronics and nicotine-related products often face product safety requirements, labelling rules and marketing restrictions. Retailers also set their own compliance thresholds for supplier onboarding and ongoing assurance.

In the book, Bryan argues that founders can treat compliance as a source of certainty when expanding into new markets. He also positions it as a way to manage product risk before it becomes an enforcement issue.

Author background

Bryan links his interest in consumer protection to personal experience. He describes being motivated by losing family members to smoking-related illnesses.

He previously wrote How Safe Is Your Vape?, which he says became an Amazon number-one bestseller. He has worked with brands navigating UK and EU regulatory regimes, with a focus on products subject to evolving guidance and active enforcement.

"This isn't about ticking boxes. It's about levelling the playing field and turning the thing most people dread - compliance - into a weapon for growth. If you're building something real, something meaningful, and you're not afraid to do things properly, you're exactly who this book was written for," said Lee Bryan, Founder and Chief Executive, Arcus Compliance.

The book is priced at GBP £16.99. Arcus Compliance said Bryan's ARC methodology frames compliance as an operational roadmap for businesses that sell into regulated categories.
