Nextcloud has launched a global partner programme for independent software vendors to expand the software available on its platform.

The open-source collaboration software provider said the programme will connect software vendors with customers through the Nextcloud App Store, where developers can promote applications, offer subscriptions, and provide support and documentation. Under the model, contracts remain between the developer and the customer, and developers are responsible for maintaining their apps.

Nextcloud wants to increase the number of apps in its store from about 600 to 6,000 within a year. The aim is to turn applications built for individual customers into products that can be used more widely across sectors and use cases.

Examples include workflow tools for municipalities, compliance applications for regulated industries, and integrations tailored to specific vertical markets. Customers would gain access to a broader range of software on top of an existing collaboration platform without large upfront investments.

Platform strategy

The move adds to a wider expansion of Nextcloud's partner network after the company overhauled its channel partner programme last year. Its global partner ecosystem grew by almost 300 per cent over that period.

That effort forms part of a EUR €250 million investment linked to digital sovereignty, as Nextcloud seeks to expand its network and strengthen existing alliances. It positions its software as an alternative for organisations seeking greater control over data and compliance with privacy rules.

The new ISV structure is also intended to formalise how third-party developers work with the platform. Alongside the launch, Nextcloud is updating developer support with improved application programming interfaces and a dedicated developer relations team.

Four launch partners have joined the programme in France, Germany, and the Netherlands: VoxCloud, which provides enterprise applications including metadata management and dashboard tools; Leviia, which offers scalability components for large Nextcloud deployments; HKN, which develops applications focused on artificial intelligence integration; and Conduction, which builds process tracking and automation tools for local authorities.

According to Nextcloud, these relationships reflect demand from software developers that want access to its customer base while retaining direct responsibility for their products and support. The structure is intended to preserve developers' independence rather than make them reliant on the platform operator.

Frank Karlitschek, chief executive officer and founder of Nextcloud, described the new programme as part of a broader platform approach.

"Nextcloud is more than a company or a product," Karlitschek said. "It's a platform that we shape together with our community and organizations in our ecosystem. In the next chapter, we want to be good stewards and do more than just offer our app building tools. With the new program, we help independent software vendors grow their audience, promote apps and provide support to their customers via the Nextcloud platform. It's in our DNA not to lock anyone in - developers included. We want them to grow with us, not depend on us."

Partner growth

Nextcloud offers workplace software that includes document editing and sharing, chat, video meetings, and email, contact, and calendar management through web and mobile applications. Its modular design allows organisations and developers to extend the software with additional apps, and it can be run on premises, in a private cloud, or with a cloud provider.

The expanded app marketplace could help broaden the range of software available to customers in the public and private sectors. For developers, the attraction is likely to be access to organisations already using Nextcloud for collaboration and content management.

Heike Radtke, vice president of marketing and head of the Nextcloud partner programme, said the response from prospective participants had been strong.

"There is high demand to participate in the Nextcloud ISV partner Program," Radtke said. "Ultimately, both sides benefit: as our partners succeed, our platform and our footprint grow too. Partners and ISV developers are therefore a strategic pillar of our business model, and we intend to develop this area significantly in the future."
