Northern Data acquires NVIDIA H200 GPUs in Supermicro deal

Wed, 10th Jul 2024

Northern Data Group has announced its purchase of NVIDIA H200 GPUs through a new partnership with Supermicro. The acquisition positions Northern Data Group's cloud platform, Taiga Cloud, as Europe's first Cloud Service Provider (CSP) to offer access to the H200 GPU hardware.

The delivery and deployment of the H200 GPUs are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024. This partnership aims to bolster Northern Data's existing Generative AI Cloud Service Provider offering, already the largest in Europe. These GPUs will be housed in one of Northern Data Group's European data centres, which are powered by carbon-free, renewable energy and have a Power Usage Effectiveness ratio of less than 1.2.

Aroosh Thillainathan, Founder and CEO of Northern Data Group, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Our GenAI platform is constantly evolving and we are proud to collaborate with Supermicro to be the first in Europe to offer access to NVIDIA H200 GPUs. This is a testament to our commitment to continually offer industry-leading, next-generation solutions."

Vik Malyala, President and Managing Director of EMEA and SVP of Technology and AI at Supermicro, also commented on the collaboration: "We are excited to collaborate with Northern Data Group to expand its GenAI Cloud offering to include Supermicro GPU servers based on the latest Nvidia H200 HGX GPUs. Supermicro is fully committed to delivering the most performant and energy-efficient AI infrastructure and solutions, and this collaboration will accelerate availability and bring the best value for customers in Europe."

The deployment will feature over 2,000 NVIDIA H200 GPUs, utilising BlueField-3 data processing units (DPUs) and NVIDIA Mellanox CX7 network interface cards (NICs), delivering 32 petaFLOPS of performance. This configuration aims to provide customers with more bandwidth, faster data processing, and more efficient data storage access.

As an Elite Partner of NVIDIA, Northern Data Group continues to prioritise cutting-edge technology. It intends to maximise the capabilities of these new GPUs according to recommended architecture references.

This development marks a significant milestone for Northern Data Group, further solidifying its position in the European HPC and Generative AI market. The company aims to offer extensive computing power while maintaining a commitment to sustainability through using renewable energy sources for its data centres.

The partnership with Supermicro and the acquisition of NVIDIA H200 GPUs underscore Northern Data Group's ambition to stay at the forefront of technological innovations in high-performance computing and generative AI. The move is expected to substantially boost Northern Data Group's capabilities and services offered to its clientele in various sectors.
