PingCar has launched a QR-based platform that lets people contact vehicle owners without exchanging personal phone numbers. The Swiss startup says the service is designed for everyday vehicle-related communication.

Vehicle owners place a PingCar QR code on their vehicle. Anyone who needs to reach them can scan the code with a smartphone, open a contact page, write a message and send it through the platform.

The service is intended for situations where a vehicle owner needs to be alerted quickly, such as when a car is blocking a driveway, parked badly or has its lights left on. Messages are routed through the platform rather than shared through direct personal contact details.

How it works

PingCar says the platform is built around a privacy-focused model. The sender does not receive the vehicle owner's phone number, while the owner can be notified and reply within the system.

The service is aimed at private vehicle owners, but PingCar also sees potential uses for businesses, fleets and rental vehicles. It could be used anywhere a simple way to contact the person responsible for a vehicle is needed.

That includes residential areas, workplaces, apartment buildings, public parking spaces and private parking facilities. PingCar is positioning the service as a digital alternative to leaving handwritten notes or trying to trace ownership through other channels.

The platform was developed with international users in mind and supports multiple languages. PingCar says this could help during cross-border travel and in situations where drivers and bystanders do not share the same language.

Pricing model

New users are offered a seven-day free trial. After that, pricing starts at CHF 4.90 a month or CHF 49.90 a year.

PingCar describes the service as part of a wider effort to simplify communication linked to vehicles. The business is based in Switzerland and is working to expand across markets and languages.

In company-issued comments, the PingCar team said the idea came from a common problem faced by drivers and the public. "PingCar was created to solve a very simple everyday problem: how can people contact a vehicle owner quickly without having to exchange personal contact details?" the team said.

The team said privacy was central to the platform's design. "Our goal is to make communication around vehicles easier and more respectful while keeping privacy in mind," it said.
