Turnitin has announced the general availability of Turnitin Clarity alongside an updated version of Turnitin Feedback Studio, introducing new features intended to support academic integrity and responsible use of artificial intelligence in education.
The addition of Turnitin Clarity is designed to offer transparency and guidance for both students and educators in an environment where AI is increasingly present in educational settings. The integrated solution aims to make the writing process more visible, provide streamlined feedback, and offer a detailed view of student work construction through features such as revision timelines, indicators of pasted versus typed text, and summaries of AI chat history.
Turnitin Clarity operates within a newly restructured Feedback Studio, enabling tasks such as similarity checking, AI writing detection, and access to submission metrics through a single interface. The company noted that these changes aim to create a comprehensive environment for drafting, revising, and reflecting on assignments, all while supporting dialogue about academic ethics and integrity.
Chief Product Officer at Turnitin, Annie Chechitelli, stated,
"Turnitin Clarity is our response to a defining challenge in education, how to uphold academic integrity and embrace the responsible use of AI. In an AI-powered world, we need more than detection, we need solutions that promote learning, invite dialogue, and equip educators and students to use AI ethically and confidently. That's why we built Turnitin Clarity."
Key elements of Turnitin Clarity include its guided AI assistant, which supports students throughout the writing process by reinforcing structure, originality, and the ethical use of generative AI. The platform also facilitates transparency for educators, providing insights into how a student's work evolved from inception to submission, including when and how AI assistance was used.
The updated Turnitin Feedback Studio now features a more modern, accessible interface, improved similarity reporting with integrated AI insights, and more flexible feedback and grading workflows. According to the company, these enhancements allow faster and more effective feedback delivery while supporting a variety of assignment types, including both traditional and AI-assisted writing.
James Thorley, Regional Vice President for APAC and EMEA at Turnitin, commented,
"As development and adoption of AI throughout society grows, we must provide the education sector with the necessary capabilities to understand and leverage these solutions. Turnitin Clarity creates a flexible, transparent, and controlled environment for students to use AI without it detracting from their learning. It also empowers educators to better evaluate integrity and appropriate AI-use, while improving engagement with students. The resulting understanding of the responsible use of AI will equip both educators and students with the confidence to maintain integrity, while cultivating meaningful and practical learning outcomes."
Research conducted by Turnitin in partnership with Vanson Bourne highlights that while 78% of surveyed students, educators, and administrators report positive perceptions of AI's impact in education, 95% acknowledge its misuse in some form. The top challenge cited was overcoming uncertainty about ensuring integrity in the use of AI. Turnitin's report emphasises that workflow transparency between students and educators will be essential to realising the full benefits of AI in education while protecting academic integrity.
The newly available Turnitin Clarity can be added as a paid feature for existing Turnitin Feedback Studio customers. The latest version of the Feedback Studio is now widely accessible, supporting institutions as they adapt to the changes and challenges presented by AI in the classroom.
