Xiaomi plans EUR €7.4bn AI push ahead of IFA debut
Wed, 1st Jul 2026 (Today)
Xiaomi will make its first appearance at IFA in Berlin as part of its longer-term expansion in Europe.
It also plans to invest €7.4 billion in artificial intelligence research and development between 2026 and 2028, with Europe positioned as one of its global innovation hubs.
At an official IFA event in Berlin, the Chinese consumer technology group set out the scale of its European ambitions. The trade show will be the point at which it introduces European audiences to its "Human × Car × Home" ecosystem, which links personal devices, smart home products and smart mobility.
The ecosystem is central to Xiaomi's broader strategy to connect smartphones, home products and electric vehicles. Several of its main product announcements for Europe are being held back until the Berlin show.
Europe focus
Europe plays a central role in Xiaomi's globalisation strategy and wider research effort. Between 2026 and 2030, the company expects total research and development spending to exceed €24 billion across AI, electric vehicles, robotics, operating systems and other core technologies.
The group is also expanding its research footprint in Europe by hiring local talent and working more closely with regional partners. Those efforts are intended to align its products and technologies more closely with the needs and habits of European users.
The announcement comes as consumer technology groups compete to build broader device ecosystems that keep users within a single software and hardware environment. For Xiaomi, that means extending beyond handsets and home appliances into transport, with AI acting as the connective layer between products.
As of the first quarter of 2026, Xiaomi's AI ecosystem covered more than 1.1 billion connected devices worldwide across more than 200 categories, including health products, entertainment, home appliances and personal mobility.
Separate company figures show 754.1 million monthly active users globally on smartphones and tablets by the end of 2025. Excluding smartphones, laptops and tablets, its internet of things platform had 1,079.2 million connected devices at the end of 2025.
Showcase plans
Xiaomi's IFA appearance will give media, partners and users a closer look at how AI can move from individual screens into everyday settings. The aim is to show how personal devices, home technology and mobility products can be connected within a single user experience.
The company did not disclose which products it plans to show in Berlin, saying only that the event will include several European firsts from across its ecosystem.
The move marks a notable step in Xiaomi's public positioning in Europe. While it already sells a wide range of consumer devices across the region, it described the Berlin event as its most significant engagement yet with European media and partners.
Zeng Hua, PR Director for Western Europe at Xiaomi Group, outlined that approach in comments issued by the company.
"Europe is not a market we simply visit. It is a region where we listen, learn and build," said Zeng Hua, PR Director for Western Europe at Xiaomi Group.
He also linked the IFA debut to the company's wider ecosystem strategy.
"Coming to IFA for the first time is an important step in that journey. In September, we look forward to showing how Xiaomi's Human × Car × Home smart ecosystem can bring AI beyond individual devices and into everyday life. We are saving the full story for Berlin, but today is where that conversation begins," Hua said.
Xiaomi was founded in 2010 and has grown from a smartphone maker into a broader consumer electronics and smart manufacturing company. It now operates across phones, connected devices and smart electric vehicles, and says its car business reached profitability within six quarters of starting deliveries, with more than 600,000 units delivered by February 2026.
The company sells products in more than 100 countries and regions and was ranked 297th in the Fortune Global 500 in 2025.
